Place on Earth First Experienced the Turn of the Year

cb mania....!

A few hours ago, people around the world prepared to celebrate the New Year 2010. Did you know where new year celebrations will occur the first time in the world? The answer is Kiritimati. Kiritimati or Christmas Island is a Pacific Ocean atoll in the northern Line Islands and part of the Republic of Kiribati.

New year celebration in Kiritimati recorded as the first in the world. Kiritimati is in the world's furthest forward time zone, UTC +14 or +6 hours earlier than Jakarta-Indonesia. Kiritimati is the first inhabited place on Earth to experience the New Year each year.

For the category of major cities, Auckland in New Zealand is the first city in the world to celebrate the turn of the year. The next shift occurred in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and eventually America.

Please zoom the map out if you can't see the location. It is very small atoll [coral island] eastern of Papua Indonesia in North Pacific Ocean, north east of Sydney.
